What is microchipping?
A microchip is a permanent method of electronic identification. The chip is the size of a grain of rice and is implanted at the back of your pet’s neck. Each chip has a unique number that is recorded on a database with details about you and your pet. If you lose your pet they can be scanned to find your contact information – so keep your details up to date!
Do I have to get my cat or dog microchipped?
Yes. In Victoria, cats and dogs have to be registered by three months old, and microchipping is part of the registration process.
Where do I find my pet's microchip number?
You might have your pet’s microchip number with their registration paperwork. If not, you’ll need to visit a vet, shelter or local council where your pet can be scanned.
How do I update my pet’s microchip details?
- If you have your pet’s registry details, contact them and ask them to update your file – you may also be able to do this online.
- If you have your pet’s microchip number, but don’t know the registry, visit www.petaddress.com.au and find out where your information is stored.
