The 2024 jumps racing season was a devastating one for horses, with one of the highest fatality rates on record. In 2024, 7 horses died during jumps races, 2 horses died during jumps trials, and a further three died during training or following participation in a jumps event.

Grand Promenade
Grand Promenade, 9 year old was euthanased on the racetrack after falling during a hurdle race (25 March, Warrnambool).
Originating from Great Britain, he began flats racing in Australia in 2019 and competed in the Melbourne Cup twice. He trialled in hurdles for the first time in 2024. The hurdle race in which he fell and was euthanased was his first and only jumps race.
Fatigues
Fatigues, 7 year old fell during a hurdle race (23 June, Warrnambool) and died. It’s unclear if he was euthanased or if he died immediately from the catastrophic nature of his injury.
He began flats racing in 2020, running his first hurdle trial in 2024. He ran two hurdle races, the second of which was his last. Before the race where he fell and died, he was issued a ‘Not to Race’ veterinary certificate following a jumps trial where he finished last (reason for the certificate is not specified). This certificate was cleared three days before his fatal run.
Joffrey
Joffrey, 5 year old fell and died during his first hurdle race (30 June, Casterton), which was then abandoned. It’s unclear if he was euthanased or if he died immediately from the catastrophic nature of his injury.
Originating from New Zealand, he began racing in Australia in 2024. He competed in flats races and only two hurdle trials, one of which he finished last. He fell and died during his first hurdle race.
Rider
Rider in the Snow, 10 years old was euthanased off-track following a fall during a hurdle race (7 July, Warrnambool).
Originating in France, he began flats racing in Australia at two years old, running his first hurdle race in 2022. He competed in a combination of flats and hurdle races until he fell at a jump and was euthanased. His horse form indicates that he was issued two ‘Not to Race’ veterinary certificates on 1 June (reasons unspecified), one of which was cleared on 23 June (the day of another hurdle race), and the other was cleared the day before he fell and was euthanased. However, he also competed in a hurdle race on the 2 June, where he was noted by Stewards’ to have jumped two obstacles awkwardly.
Maserartie Bay
Maserartie Bay, 8 yearold faltered during a hurdle race (25 August, Ballarat), sustained a serious injury and was euthanased.
Began flats racing in 2019, running his first hurdle trial in 2024. He ran only two hurdle races, the second of which was his last.
Buffalo Bill
Buffalo Bill, 9 year old faltered during a hurdle race (25 August, Ballarat), sustained a serious injury and was euthanased.
Started flats racing in 2019, running his first hurdle trials in 2020. He then ran a combination of hurdle and flats races until his last jumps race.
Mighty Oasis
Mighty Oasis, 9 year old fell during a steeple race (25 August, Ballarat), sustained a serious injury and was euthanased.
Originating from Great Britain, he started flats racing in 2019, running his first hurdle trial in 2020 and hurdle race in 2021, and his first steeple race in 2023. He then ran a combination of steeple and flats races until he fell and was euthanased.

Rebel Racer
Rebel Racer, 8 year old was euthanased on the racetrack after falling during a hurdle trial (19 April, Warrnambool).
Started flats racing in 2020. He first trialled for hurdle races in 2024, but was unable to finish his second qualifying trial (failure to finish occurs when a horse is removed from the race due to being unable to continue to safely compete or if it is out of contention). His fourth jumps trial was his last, where he fatally fell. He never competed in a jumps race.
Mont Agel
Mont Agel, 9 year old fractured his pelvis during a steeple trial, (27 May, Warrnambool), and was subsequently marked as deceased on his Racing Australia horse form.
Began flats racing in 2018, running his first hurdle trial in 2019, but not qualifying to compete in his first hurdle race until 2021. He began trialling for steeple races in 2023, but never qualified to run a steeple race. Following a hurdle race where he failed to finish, less than one month later he was competing at his last event – the steeple trial where he fractured his pelvis.
The horses who died during training or following participation in a jumps race
San Remo
San Remo, 11 year old died in January from an injury sustained during training (a trackwork accident). It’s not clear what kind of training was taking place or how he died.
Originating from Ireland, he began flats racing at two years old in 2016. He ran his first hurdle race in 2020, eventually running steeple races as well.
Sivar
Sivar, 8 year old ran his final race – a steeple race – on 1 May, Warrnambool. No further information is available, and he is marked as deceased on his Racing Australia horse form.
Began flats racing in 2019. Ran his first hurdle race in 2021 and continued to run a combination of flats and hurdles. Ran one steeple trial in 2024, immediately before running his first and only steeple race. After running this race he never competed in any race type again. He had failed to finish a hurdle trial prior to being trialled for steeplechasing. He had also been issued two ‘Not to Race’ veterinary certificates in early April which were both cleared soon after.
The Rattlin’ Bog
The Rattlin’ Bog, 8 year old ran his final race – a steeple race – on 1 May, Warrnambool. He was issued a ‘Not to Race’ veterinary certificate following this event due to a laceration he had sustained, and which needed referral for surgical evaluation. No further information is available, and he is marked as deceased on his Racing Australia horse form.
Originating from New Zealand, he began flats racing in Australia in 2020 and ran his first hurdle trial in 2023. He fell during his first hurdle race in 2023. He began steeple trialling in 2024, and ran only two steeple races, the second of which was his last race.

Gunaluva
Gunaluva, 8 year old ran his last race – a hurdle race (19 May, Casterton), and was issued a ‘Not to Race’ veterinary certificate due to a tendon injury sustained during the race. No further information available. Marked deceased.
Originating from New Zealand, he began flats racing in Australia in 2018 at two years old. He ran his first hurdle race in 2023, moving quickly into steeplechasing. He ran a combination of race types, though largely steeple races, until his injury.
Emerging
Emerging, 6 year old ran two hurdle trials in 2024 but he otherwise ran in flats races. His last race was a flats race held in August. No further information is available. Marked deceased.
