RSPCA Victoria recommends keeping all pet-related documents in a safe place, including records that could help show ownership and veterinary history. Our SafePaws Crisis Support Coordinator works with dedicated case workers to ensure companion animals are considered and included in safe exit planning. See below for specific examples of what to consider having ready and available if required:
Safety Planning Checklists and Resources for your pet
What documents might be useful if preparing to leave an unsafe situation?
- Proof of Microchipping. All animals over three months of age should be microchipped
- Pet Registration or other documentation. If you can’t locate formal microchip details, proving ownership through purchase or ownership transfer records, council registration letters, veterinary records and personal evidence (e.g., photographs, videos) will also suffice, can also prove ownership, etc.)
* All Victorian pet records should be listed on Central Animal Records. Visit petaddress.com.au and enter your pet’s microchip number to find out which database they are registered with, including if they were previously registered with the now-closed Homesafe ID registry.
What other details, items or information should be considered?
- Any information regarding any dietary requirements for care continuity.
- Any medical or behavioural issues of note to include for ongoing management, along with a list of any medications and special directives.
- Consider any items or supplies like carriers, toys, safety harnesses, collars or leads, as well as food supplies.
- Your pet may benefit by being placed in the trusted care of a familiar face or frequently visited home, in which case a friend or family member caring for your animal companion might be the best option.
