Microchipping 101

Microchipping gives your pet a permanent form of identification, helping lost animals find their way home faster. Unlike collars and tags, which can fall off, a microchip stays with your pet for life.
If your pet ever goes missing, having a registered microchip can make all the difference.
When registering your pet’s microchip, you’ll need a Source Number.

Step 1: Book an Appointment
Book a microchipping appointment at an RSPCA Vet Clinic, where trained veterinary professionals can safely microchip your pet.

Step 2: Obtain the Source Number To Bring To Your Appointment
When registering the microchip, you will need a source number from the seller, breeder, or rescue organisation your pet came from.

If you cannot obtain the source number, visit the Pet Exchange Register (PER) website to find or generate one: per.animalwelfare.vic.gov.au

Step 3: Microchip Implantation
A tiny microchip (about the size of a grain of rice) is gently inserted under the skin between the shoulder blades.
The procedure is quick and similar to a routine vaccination.

Step 4: Register & Keep Details Updated
Ensure your contact details are correctly recorded and kept up to date so your pet can be reunited with you if lost.
