During the 2018 Victorian State election, we had an aim to put animal welfare on the agenda of candidates and political parties. We want to say a huge thank you to our 3,000+ Furry Army supporters who helped us achieve this goal.
The campaign was a huge success with all major parties committing to at least one of our four election priorities which were;
1. Make animal welfare codes of practice mandatory
2. Include ‘duty of care’ in animal welfare legislation
3. Introduce mandatory desexing of dogs and cats
4. Reunite registered lost pets directly with their owners
Having thousands of advocates behind us helped demonstrate strong public support for action. It showed political candidates that there are votes to be won in good animal welfare policies. We look forward to working with the elected Government for the improved welfare of animals in our state. The re-elected Labor government has committed to several animal welfare changes and we look forward to the Government implementing the initiatives set out in its pre-election Plan for Pets and Animal Welfare.
Read more about these planned changes here.
Our advocacy work doesn’t end at the election. We continue to advocate on a range of animal welfare issues - both in Victoria and nationally as part of RSPCA Australia.
