The following question was taken on notice during the AGM and below is our response:
How are bans on pet ownership monitored?
A person can be disqualified from being the owner or person in charge of an animal for a certain amount of time as part of sentencing for animal cruelty offences.
Unless we are given monitoring orders as part of a sentence by a court, it’s really tricky for us to monitor. This is something we are hoping updated sentencing guidelines will help us to accomplish.
If RSPCA Victoria Inspectors receive a report of a person breaching their disqualification order, Inspectors will undertake a thorough investigation. This may bring further criminal proceedings against the person breaching their order.
If a compliance monitoring order is issued at the time of sentence, Inspectors will regularly monitor compliance with the disqualification order.
